Merry Christmas from Pete and the Monkees

Here's a tune you probably haven't heard since you stopped watching the syndicated Monkees show in the early 70's.

And for those of you who have never heard it (Dad, Mom), I think you'll like it a lot.

Here are the lyrics and the translation:

Riu riu chiu, la guarda ribera:
Dios guardo el lobo de nuestra cordera.
Dios guardo el lobo de nuestra cordera.

El lobo rabioso la quiso morder.
Mas Dios poderoso la supo defender:
Quisola hazer que no pudiese pecar.
Ni aun original esta Virgen no tuviera.

Riu, riu hiu...

Este qu'es nacido es el gran monarca.
Christo patriarca de carne vestido:
Hemos redemido con se hazer chiquito.
Aunqu'era infinito, finito se hiziera.

Riu, riu chiu...

Translated:

River, roaring river, guard our homes in safety.
God has kept the black wolf from our lamb, our Lady.
God has kept the black wolf from our lamb, our Lady.

Raging mad to bite her, there the wolf did steal.
But our God Almighty defended her with zeal.
Pure He wished to keep Her so She could never sin.
That first sin of man never touched the Virgin sainted.

River, roaring river...

He who's now begotten is our mighty Monarch.
Christ, our Holy Father, in human flesh embodied.
He has brought atonement by being born so humble.
Though He is immortal, as mortal was created.

River, roaring river...

Jeanine with Brad and Angelina

After Jerry Lee Lewis finished his set at the "Make It Right" party in the 9th Ward Monday night, Jeanine went up to the stage to take pictures of her friend George Porter playing with Ivan Neville.  Someone bumped her, and it was Brad and Angelina's bodyguard warning her away.  But they indicated Jeanine was alright and talked with her and danced with her.

Jeanine has pictures we haven't downloaded from her camera yet, but in Us magazine this week is this picture from their website [attached] showing Angelina looking into Jeanine's eyes while Brad watches the band.  Jeanine's hand is holding an imaginary glass.

How a bill becomes...

Video Description

funny clip that pokes fun at American government

This is funny on far too many levels to capture in a single sentence.

More Cake - Comfort Eagle (Rob)

This one's kind of literal, but I love the song:

or this one (same song, also interesting graphics):

For anybody who likes CAKE. I love 'em.

Political test

Hey sibs and 'rents!
Here's a simple online political "affinity" test:
Everyone please take it and copy/paste your results in "comments" below this
topic. I have a theory that we're almost all going to have the same results.
Please be honest!

The Decider

"I hear the voices and I read the front page and I know the speculation," the president told reporters in the Rose Garden.
"But I'm the decider and I decide what's best. And what's best is for Don  Rumsfeld to remain as the secretary of defense."
  - actual quote from you-know-who.

  "I'm the Decider"
 by Roddy McCorley
(channelling Dr. Suess)

  I'm the decider.
  I pick and I choose.
  I pick among whats.
  And choose among whos.

  And as I decide
  Each particular day,
  The things I decide on
  All turn out that way.

I decided on Freedom For all of Iraq.
And now that we have it,
 I'm not looking back.

 I decided on tax cuts
 That just help the wealthy.
 And Medicare changes
 That aren't really healthy.

  And parklands and wetlands
  Who needs all that stuff?
  I decided that none
  Would be more than enough!

  I decided that schools
All in all are the best.
  The less that they teach
And the more that they test.

  I decided those wages
  You need to get by,
  Are much better spent
  On some CEO guy.

  I decided your Wade
  Which was versing your Roe,
  Is terribly awful
  And just has to go.

  I decided that levees
  Are not really needed.
  Now when hurricanes come
  They can come unimpeded.

  That old Constitution?
  Well, I have decided-
  As "just goddam paper"
  It should be derided.

  I've decided gay marriage
  Is icky and weird.
  Above all other things,
It's the one to be feared.

  And Cheney and Rummy
  And Condi all know
 That I'm the Decider -
 They tell me it's so.

  I'm the Decider
  So watch what you say,
  Or I may decide
  To have you whisked away.

 Or I'll tap your phones.
 Your e-mail I'll read.
 `cause I'm the Decider -
 Like Jesus decreed.

 Yes, I'm the Decider!
 The finest alive!
 And I'm nuking Iran
 Now watch this drive!

Now that I think about it, Dr. Seuss  anticipated this administration pretty well when he wrote Yertle the Turtle...

Happy Birthday to Me

Urbanathlon

Patrice and I participated in this 12 mile race on Oct 18th in Chicago. This pic is of me and Patrice's friend Jennifer. She and two other friends of ours ran the whole race, while Jennifer's husband, Allen, joined Patrice and me doing it as a 3-leg relay race.
The race included 6 obstacles. Here you see us just after coming down from the "scaffold maze" at the end of the second leg of the race.
The first leg was 4.5 miles (Allen ran it), the second also 4.5 miles (I ran it), and Patrice ran the final 3 miles, with three obstacles that included running the stairs of Soldier Field (Bears Stadium).
We finished 35th out of 63 co-ed relay teams, and 546 out of 903 competing individuals and teams.

Labor Day pics from Sal

Thanks to everyone in Minnesota, and beyond - for making this the best Machalek reunion ever (in my opinion!) It was so great to see everyone, and spend time with you all. Jon and Andrea, thank you for being such gracious hosts, and opening up your home to the onslaught of folks once again. The food was fabulous day in and day out, ping pong, bike riding, bocci and wiffle ball, jetskiing, bonfires-it was all great.. Pete and Jill, thank you for hosting the Friday night gig-that was a great way to start out the weekend! Rob, you did a great job with the yummy meal for Dad's b'day(with Haydee and Liz too!) thanks for all you did. It was a great success, and I hope we can all get together again! Enjoy the pics- brings back some nice memories... Love to all.. Sally

People send in anonymous secrets on handmade postcards. Usually something interesting or disturbing. Today's gem: "My ex would leave toenail clippings on my nightstand. I cooked in his mac & cheese."

Bill Hicks - positive drug story

Just what it says, for the first 3 minutes.

The second part, starting at 2:20: "The world is like a ride at an amusement park..." is very good.

Founded: Machalek Cultural Blog

This is the blog we discussed on the last day of Machapalooza 2007, founded the same day.

This will hopefully include links to things like an online photo album we can all contribute to (say, pictures from Machapalooza 2007).

I'll post a few sample items that came up during our conversations, but I'd appreciate if everyone tried posting something at least once in the next week. It would get us rolling.

Each item here has a place to comment (click "comment" next to the item, a here, below right).

To start a new "post" (e.g. a new topic) it's similar to sending an e-mail. In the dark blue bar, upper right on this page, click "New Post". Enter a title and post "body". If your post includes a link to some location on the web (a "URL") then enter it in the "Link" line.

For now, I'll leave whatever gets put up, but later I'll delete the lame stuff that's really just you trying to practice posting.

OK Go - Why not start with this one

Here's a link to a very fun video -- "OK Go" on treadmills
